Hi All,

I would like to make a pictorial schematic as simple (light) as possible and then want to show some products with a single label: the Product Information (Name) filled in Properties window.
And not showing manufacturer and model number in two lines as it is by default.
E.g.:
A Panasonic TX-L55WT65B would be labelled 'TV'
A Vivitek DH765Z-UST would be labelled 'Projector'

Any idea how to do that ?

Side question:
I've seen in the video 'Working with Attributes in Products' #13 from 00:20 that manufacturer and model number are displayed on one line not two lines. How is it done ?

Thanks
Hughes

Hi Hughes,

To make changes to product symbols there are basically 2 approaches:

1) Edit the symbol in place.
If you want to change, move or delete (but not add) elements in a symbol in a drawing you can use the Unlock Cursor.  This ignores the grouping of a hierarchy and 'drills down' to an individual element so you can change, move or delete it without breaking the hierarchy.

Important: always remember to exit Unlock Cursor mode, e.g. hit [Escape], when you have finished editing the symbol; the Unlock Cursor can have very destructive effects on symbols if used carelessly e.g. the visible parts of a symbol may become disassociated from the hidden parts, so beware!

2) Create a UDP.
If you want to edit or add elements in a symbol, or you always want a product symbol to be different from the default library symbol, create a User Defined Product and use the Symbol Editor to make whatever changes you want.  To access the Symbol Editor, in the Product Browser rightclick on your UDP and choose Edit Symbols.

To achieve your stated objective you could use method 1 to:
a) delete the label(s) you don't want.
b) associate a label with an Attribute; in the Properties Grid choose a text Attribute e.g. "Type" from the dropdown.  Note that "(Name)" is the one Attribute you cannot use for this purpose - it's a legacy field that doesn't behave like real Product Attributes and this is why it is outside the product's Attributes collection in the Properties Grid.

Regarding your other question, some very old symbols used to have a single line for Mfr/Mod# but the symbol standard was changed many years ago and all modern symbols have Manufacturer and Model Number on 2 lines.

I hope this is helpful.

Kind regards,
Rob Robinson

Hey Rob,
I'm attempting to follow your instruction for associating an attribute with a label inside a UDP.  I'm unable to select an attribute for a label - it reads (none) and there are no other choices in the drop-down.  What am I missing here?

Thanks!

Hi Hughes,

Apologies - I wasn't completely clear on this technique.

You can use the technique to choose a Text attribute in the Properties Grid only when you're in a project drawing, after you have inserted the symbol into the drawing.

If you want to have a text field in a UDP that is permanently associated with an Attribute you need to have a text object in the UDP of the format "[AttributeName]".  There's a movie called Text Attributes that details this method, #17 at https://www1.stardraw.com/stardraw/sd7/movies

Kind regards,
