From a UI perspective, it is very intuitive to type in a product model number and it appear immediately in the Product search filter.
However, I argue it is just as intuitive to type in the manufacturer or description and expect that to appear in the search results. It isn't often that everyone remembers very specific model numbers and it is clunky (especially on ultrawide/high res screens) to have to click the drop down and switch manufacturer just to see all their products and sift through their lineup.

Could the search for products not incorporate all fields (Manufacturer, Model Number and Description) in its indexing?

Hi Pixelartworks,

Thanks for the post.  I assume you are referring to searches in the Products view.

Search today already filters through both Model Number and Description fields so, for example, if the search string is "mp" results could include:
Alesis     RA150      Reference Amplifier
AMX       MXA-MP  Modero X Series Multi Preview

Since results are additive, searching Manufacturer as well could prove problematic because, in this case, the results would also include ALL products for ALL manufacturers whose name includes "mp" and, currently, that's 16 manufacturers with over 400 products.

We will discuss internally but the omission of Manufacturer from the search string is by design, and having a simple dropdown facilitates filtering by Manufacturer without tedious typing and removes the possibility of misspelt Manufacturer names.

Kind regards,
Rob Robinson

Thanks for the reply Rob.

It occurred to me that the exact functionality I referred to is already implemented in the "Product Browser" pane of a drawing. This intuitive way of searching yields much more expected results and could be seen as jarring that the Product search function on the "Products" page of a project does not function the same.

Hi Pixelartworks,

It's often problematic to suggest how things should be done because of possibly incorrect assumptions about how things work, or an incomplete understanding of the ecosystem.

Let's back up and get to the heart of the matter; what, specifically, is the problem you are trying to solve, or the objective you wish to achieve?

Kind regards,
