Adding Text w/ Attributes to a symbol

I am attempting to customize some symbols, but I am having issues with the attributes after the symbol is modified. For example, I took a generic compression driver, unlocked the symbol, moved the text blocks around, and edited their attributes, then saved the symbol in my libraries. This works fine, but as soon as I modify the shape or add extra lines and "group" the new shapes it loses all the attributes and I cannot "click assign" the attributes. Also, what if I wanted to add a text box with a different attribute to an existing product? This doesn't seem possible as the attributes for the symbol do not show up when adding attributes to the text box. So if a speaker has two text fields, but I need three, I can't do it. Am I missing something in the process?

Thanks!

Rather than editing in the source document, instead you should edit the newly-created symbol file, i.e. drag your selection into the Library List under My Libraries, name it, and then doubleclick on that symbol to open it for editing.  This allows you to, for instance, add attributes to the document (i.e. the symbol file) and then link new text fields to those attributes.

Whenever possible, you should make edits in the symbol file itself, rather than to a symbol after it has been inserted into a document.

I hope this is helpful.
